There are many feed tools out there but if this then that is the one that I have seen that gives you the most options to choose from. However when you create a feed (IFTTT calls it a “recipe”) you have to use them with a little bit of caution. In some cases they may not work exactly the way you think they will. Here are two If This Then That (IFTTT) fixed recipes.
For example this was a recipe that was created to share my fitness support groups images from Instagram on Twitter using the hashtag mamavation. In my mind it was a way to show support and share relevant content to my fit friends on Twitter. One morning while checking my Twitter feed I noticed some images that were appearing that didn’t look quite right.
It’s not that these images were inappropriate but I knew that those images were not from this group. After researching my feed it was clear that someone not within the mamavation group was using that hashtag. As you can see by this screen shot some instagram users fill there posts with nothing but hashtags which serves no purpose for my Twitter followers. This is what I would call a “recipe fail.” I quickly logged into my IFTTT account and deleted that recipe.
The lesson here is if you are going to use a hashtag recipe be sure to keep an eye on the content. You don’t want to blend in with the noise because it adds no value to your followers.
Another recipe problem was found while I was reading my tumblr feed. Tumblr is another platform that still puzzles me to this day but that’s another post entirely. I’m a follower of Sprittibee’s tumblr who is a blogger and photographer. She photographed the Blog Elevated conference here in Houston this year.
Her updates kept showing up without images as you can see by the screen shot on the left. This made no sense to me because I can see that her posts are “via instagram” which is obviously an image based platform. Also I knew it was a recipe because of the IFTTT hashtag. I contacted her and we began trouble shooting and on her end she didn’t see any problems. We were both right because if you go to her tumblr site everything does look fine and it’s working the way it should.
As a follower and user of tumblr it’s not working the way it should in the back end of my feed. You want it to work for your users because they are the ones who are liking, adding notes, or reblogging your content. As the recipe is now I would have to click on every box to see the image. It’s a super quick fix!
The recipe was made to display the instagram images she “likes” as a “text post” and all she needs to do is go into her IFTTT account and edit her recipe to create a “photo post” and the problem is solved. The image will display in the back end for her tumblr followers and there you have it, problem solved!

Here is a quick plug for my other tumblr site. What do you get when you cross laughter and photographs? Most likely it’s a photo bomb. If you have a family friendly photo bomb that you would like to share with me please submit it here Favorite photo bombs on tumblr.
