Describe a time you made things…awkward.
It all started innocently enough as a joke. At least it seemed like a funny joke at the time. Today was a day when I felt like I was losing my mind because my memory was failing me. Have you ever started out on one site only to click over to another and you begin reading, get side tracked and can’t remember what you are doing there to begin with?
While surfing Facebook that’s what happened to me and sure enough this “joke” caught my eye. It made me laugh and quickly without thinking it through I followed suit and added it to my wall. Those folks that were tagged in my chat window thought it was funny too. One friend (not tagged) didn’t think it was funny at all.
When the notification alerted me that there was a new comment and I saw nothing but a sad face on my wall my heart literally just sank. The entire “joke” was offensive to someone I consider a good friend. I’m ALL about humor and if anyone enjoys a good laugh it’s me! That’s one of the reasons I love reading Mama Kat so much, she makes me laugh out loud. If I had taken a moment to think about what I was posting it would have saved me from this awkward moment today.
How To Fix Awkward?
All I could do was immediately delete it from my wall and apologize. I mean a genuine, I screwed up and there aren’t any excuses I’m sorry kind of apology. There wasn’t any justification for it and for as many people found that it was funny a good friend of mind didn’t. It wasn’t worth keeping it posted or blowing off that person’s feelings. I was wrong, period.
Thankfully I got this response:
Even though it says no worries I feel like I should at least spread the message that some times a “joke” can go to far. In this case I think it did, for me any way. Don’t let this happen to you. Maybe instead of joining in, maybe you take a step back and think twice before posting jokes. I’m all for a good laugh but not at the expense of a good friend. What do you think? Is this awkward enough?
