Mama Kat has given her readers these options for this weeks pretty much world famous writer’s workshop.
1.) Somebody you’d like to hug.
2.) What did not get accomplished this summer that you wish you had time for?
3.) Write a post that incorporates the word: balloon
4.) Something your grandfather told you.
5.) List 7 qualities your mother has that you wish you had too.
My choice? Hug a Soldier
My son checked out this book about the special forces and it interested me because of the physical fitness requirements to be selected for each field.
Here is a brief run down.
2 mile run 12-14 minutes
100 sit ups in 2 minutes
100 push ups in 2 minutes
42 push ups in 2 minutes
50 sit ups in 2 minutes
6 pull ups
1.5 miles in boots and long pants in 11 minutes and 30 seconds
Swim 25 meters under water with one breath
1,000 meter sidestroke or free style in 26 minutes
Run 1.5 miles in less than 10 minutes and 30 seconds
8 chin ups in a minute or less
50 sit ups in 2 minutes or less
50 flutter kicks in 2 minutes or less
Those that stand out can do the following:
Run 3 miles under 21 minutes
30-60 push ups in 2 minutes
100 to 130 sit ups within 4 minutes
12 pull ups or chin ups correctly (most likely from a dead hang)
Swim 1,500 meters in less than 28 minutes
Now, I don’t know if you have tried any of this but I certainly have tried some of it. And by some I mean maybe a 1/4 of it? The physical fitness required to do these things is amazing. I understand completely why we need healthy fit soldiers.
My son wants to be a Marine. Even though part of me is proud, another part worries about what he will see and how that could change him. Reading through this book made me feel like a big slug. It made me realize a little more what the men and women who serve are out there doing to maintain our freedom.
For that I would choose to hug a soldier.
