Why should you care about this book tour? Could it really put you on the road to “Awesome?” Can you punch fear in the face and do work that matters? I believe you can. I believe that I can. What makes me so sure? Let me take you on my Jon Acuff journey.
Our family has been on the Financial Peace University plan since September of 2009. To say that we are familiar with Dave Ramsey is an understatement. We are submerged in the program. We listen to his talk show at home. We became coordinators at our church to help others. We are believers in the plan. Dave offers a series called Entreleadership for business. It seemed obvious to me that if his plan was working in our personal lives then why wouldn’t it work in business?
In October of 2012 my husband and I attended the Entreleadership event. Jon Acuff was one of the speakers. My husband had to leave early for kid pick up so he missed it. For me, I completely connected with Jon and his message. It wasn’t hard to figure out that the world would be hearing more about him. At the time his book Quitter was available for purchase at the event. I bought the book and I wanted to get my copy signed. People were already lined up and there I was debating whether or not to wait in that line.
My husband was on his way back with a car full of kids to pick me up. I watched off to the side while people talked to Jon and took pictures with him while I was still debating. All I could think was how my kids would be crazy waiting for me in the car and how impatient my husband would become waiting on me. After all how would he know that I was in this long line waiting for my book to be signed. Alas I bailed on the idea and went outside and sure enough my husband rolled up just in time to pick me up. Missed opportunity!
When I got home I subscribed to his blog and began reading. This year I got a message that a launch team would be forming for his new book Start, count me in! How can I help?
I began connecting with other people who were just as excited about his message. I didn’t know what START would be about but I knew it would be good because I really enjoyed Quitter and how could you not be intrigued about punching fear in the face? I want to be awesome instead of average. Once I started reading, it was all making sense to me. I want to do work that matters! As a stay at home mom slash blogger slash business consultant slash fill in the blank, I have always struggled.
I want to be home for my children but I also want to “use my brain” and earn money. After all, I didn’t go to school and get all these degrees just to do dishes and laundry. I would like a happy balance and I really enjoy free lance. I don’t have to earn a lot of money, just a contribution to help finish up the baby steps. I like that I have carved out my little space to do what I enjoy doing. It’s work that matters to me but where am I really headed?
Jon writes about the list of 5 stages and you will most likely see this a lot and you know why? I believe it speaks to a very large number of people. Jon Acuff hit on something we could all relate to. This system of our age and when we are supposed to do things.
- 20s – Learning
- 30s – Editing
- 40s – Mastering
- 50s – Harvesting
- 60s – Guiding
Jon Acuff lets his readers know that you don’t have to be those ages and in those stages. He’s right! Things have changed, the world has changed. I’m in my 40s and I’m still learning and editing and mastering.
The book is filled with what we think we are supposed to do and what we really can do! Why? because Jon himself gives you story after story of what happened to him. He does it with such humor! He also gives you a step by step process and really touches on those voices in our heads. You know that great idea you had? What did that inner voice tell you? Guess what? YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!!!!
No More Voices
“Do you know what fear and doubt fear? Community. One of fear and doubt’s chief aims is to make you feel alone. Like you’re the only one who feels a certain way. Fear wants to isolate you and put you on an island. Well, you’re not alone—tons of people feel the same way. That’s what this site is about. Share your voices, and together we can beat them to the ground.”
It’s anonymous and you will NOT believe how much company there is and what we all share. I have been working online for a very long time and I have never seen anything like this site. You have to see this for yourself.
If Jon Acuff comes to speak in your town go see him! You will be motivated and you will be inspired. He’s funny and you would almost swear that you were at a comedy show! Yes, he’s that good. He came to Blissdom in Dallas this year as a speaker which I missed because it was my 15th wedding anniversary, priorities!
Another invitation came my way to come to a coordinators meeting about the new Leaving a Legacy class which is the follow up to Financial Peace University. Jon was going to be there to speak along with Rachel Ramsey Cruze. Afterward we had the option of going to the Dave Ramsey Live event and maybe this time I could get a book signed!
This was so strange…..I’m getting to the punching fear in the face part just bare with me.
My Mother had my two younger children starting at 9:30am. They are truly a handful! I kid you not. I thought we would take our oldest son and just give him the experience, see what the legacy class was about and most likely head out to relieve my Mom. We ended up going to the live event and Jon was speaking about some of the topics he covers in START. My husband had not heard him speak but both he and my son have heard me talk about his books. Since I’m at the event and I’ve signed up to help, I figured I would get started tweeting with the #StartBook hash tag. Also I’m a Dave Ramsey fan, blogger, social media gal – you get the idea. I was tweeting what I thought was relevant to my followers.
They broke for the first half and my husband picked up the START book so I could have Jon sign it. I didn’t want to miss the opportunity again. I called my Mom during the 2:15 pm break and she said, “What? It’s only the first break? Alright” But what I heard in my kid head was my Mother’s tone of annoyance and wanting me to hurry up and come pick up my kids. Let me be clear, she never said that! Again, my interpretation which made me incredibly uncomfortable the second half of the event. It was great but I was nervous and needed to go get my little people it was now 5pm!
Finally they were breaking for the third half of the event. It was the perfect time to go ahead and leave. You don’t want your whole family to get up and leave in the middle of a speaker. It’s terribly rude and everyone can see you! Plus I knew that people would already be lining up to get Jon to sign their books. As we were approaching the exit door the speaker on stage was saying something about tweeting and they wanted to do something for the person who had been tweeting the most. All of a sudden…. I hear….
Pamela Kramer! Are you here Pamela Kramer? I could not believe it.
I did an about face and I’m waving my arms. “I’m right here!”
They were giving me an autographed copy of START and Gazelles, Baby Steps and 37 Other Things Dave Ramsey Taught Me about Debt.
I went up on stage and picked up my books. What? Are you serious? How cool is that? We exited the auditorium and there he was at the table already signing books. My book was already signed! I just wanted to say “Hello! Good Luck with your launch” maybe get a photo…..
This time the line was Sooooooooooooo much longer than the last time. It actually snaked around and I stood there looking at it with a sad face. I know I’m suppose to be happy because I got most of what I came for. There I was trapped in the Mommy dilemma! Then the voices started…
Your kids need to be picked up.
It’s been such a long day for my Mother and Grandmother.
It’s too long of a line.
Your Mom is going to be mad that you are even later than if you just left now.
Your husband and son are NOT going to want to wait in that line.
I stood there looking at my son and my husband and I asked, “Should I wait in the line?” already knowing the answer. This was going to be another missed opportunity. Super sad face. How could this happen twice? I was so close.
And then I did it!
I said to myself “You are helping promote START. Punch FEAR in the face and go do what you came to do! All they can do is say NO!” I spotted the lady conducting the line. That’s her on the right in that photo above. I quickly introduced myself, told her I was the Twitter winner and my copy was already signed I just wanted to see if I could quickly say hello and get a photo! I didn’t want to hold up that line.
It might not seem like much to you, but for me it’s literally a start. A start in the right direction of doing work that matters. It matters to me that I tell you my story because maybe you will read this book and it will help you face your fears. It’s possible! I took it a step further today and visited my local library to see if they needed help with classes on social media, consulting or blogging. After all, this is what I do. You can follow the tour using the hash tag #StartBook.
As a side note:
Because I got this autographed copy of the START book at the event I now have two of them. I only need one. I’m happy to pay it forward. Come find out how you could win the extra copy!
