Good Morning! It’s time for my first Crossfit competition. My partner today is Chris Donnelly creator of The Journey TV. My day starts with volunteering. I was pulling double duty today, not only was I helping with the set up I was competing. First let me tell you there are so many pictures that I’m going to give you a link to my fan page so you can get a much better glimpse of just how big this event was in Seabrook, Texas. My team was signed up to do the scaled version but don’t let that full you! It’s still hard.
First up we had the demonstration. The event coordinators explained how the event was going to go and of course the coaches demonstrated proper form.
Chris and I were in the last heat. Heat #9 and our judge would be none other than the owner Dr. Holt. The first WOD? well it goes like this; Chris gets on the rower and rows 200m while I run 200m. Only one athlete can move on the mat at a time. He can’t move until I get done with my run! No pressure right. lol – 1st up 100 deadlifts for me (95lbs). We can split it up however we want but only one of us can move at a time. If I get tired he lifts and if he gets tired I lift. We pretty much killed this part. Neither of us had a problem with deadlifts.
But wait there is more! Because now I get to row 200m and Chris gets to run and I can’t move until he gets back and I have to be finished with the rowing portion too. Again, no pressure at all. Other than it’s hot.

Chris went for the jumps but I stuck with the step ups. I had been really worried about it because my right side had been really tight. I foam rolled it and had it checked out but it was still too tight to be jumping. The last thing I wanted to do was eat the box from fatigue and it being so hot outside. The step ups were pretty darn painful for me. It was never a matter of how much did each of us do. I have no idea, the point was to get to 100 period.
But wait there is more because it’s time to switch and Chris gets to row and I get to run. HAH! There wasn’t very much running. I thought I was going to hurl all over the place! It was horrible. I just don’t like that feeling in my stomach. I finally made it back and it felt like it was an eternity!
Now it’s time for 100 back squats! My weight was 65 lbs. again this is not Rx aka prescribed this is scaled down. lol
It takes a lot of focus! I had members of my gym cheering me on. That was the coolest thing ever. There is nothing like your gym having your back! I kept going but time had run out. It was time to drop the bar and that was the end of the first WOD. I felt like a train wreck. I hadn’t run but maybe once or twice this year and that is what got me. I’m not use to running any more. Boo! But it was over and we had finished.
During our break I was going around taking lots of pictures of Crossfit “fashion.” People wear the funnest stuff for Crossfit, the shirts, the socks, the head bands. It was awesome! So many boxes were there, Kemah, Clear Lake, League City, Pearland, Deer Park, Bay Area, Houston, Cypress, Humble and I’m sure I’m leaving some out. The turn out was amazing. I’m glad they had as many volunteers as they did. We needed every single one of them! They gave away raffle tickets and gave out door prizes and thanked all the sponsors for donating. Kroger was on hand to hand out apples and bananas!

Then it was time for round two or should I say WOD 2. This one was pretty tricky. Now it’s about 1 :30pm or so. I just know it was a lot HOTTER.
First up 10 push ups. Yes I’m dropping to my knees. After that it’s Chris’ turn to do 21 sumo deadlift high pulls.
Then I get to do 21 reps of sumo deadlift high pulls. After that Chris gets to bust out 10 reps of push ups. We have to carry our plates (2 – 45lb. plates, 4 – 25lb. plates) across the parking lot to the other side where I drop and do another 10 push ups and I’m feeling it now! then we get to do 21 push presses with (for me) 18 lb kettle bells.
This part stunk because I’m not use to making them meet in the middle so I got a few no reps. Ugh! lol – Nothing like getting a no rep from the owner of the gym. Just saying! Then Chris took his turn with 21 and 10 push ups. Then it was off to carrying the plates back for 15 reps this time. I drop and give them 10 push ups and we start our 15 reps.
Chris is going strong with his 15 and I’m killing my 15 and he drops to do his 10 push ups and we take off with the plates again to the other side. Those plates are HOT. They are black and the middle is metal so it’s just plain HOT. We did a great job though of getting them across. It was time to bust out 15 push press reps. We were near the end but the clock ran out after 12 minutes. It sure felt a lot longer than that!
We didn’t make the finals but that’s ok because the finals had you doing burpee tire flips! That’s right, check this out. WOW! What a great turn out. It was a great success and I can’t wait until next year. There are so many pictures to give you a better idea of how big this event was I invite you to go check out the Beast Wars Facebook photo albums!
Thank you FWRunCo for the cool team shirts!
